How to set goals and stay motivated in 2018!

Hello Everyone! Happy 2018!

I hope everyone had a happy holiday season surrounded by friends and family. There is something I love so much about the start of a new year. I love celebrating NYE it’s by far my favorite holiday, I love the start of a fresh new calendar, and most of all I love setting goals and tracking my progress throughout the year. Which sets the tone for this post, today I’m going to let you in on some of my tips & tricks on setting goals, tracking progress, and staying motivated!

  1. Prioritize over plan

For me, this step is the most crucial and most important. Why? Because you can make a plan any day of the week, but if it’s not a priority to you, is it going to get done? Probably not. This took me forever to finally grasp, but I find that when you list your goals and prioritize them in the order that matters most, you’re more likely to work toward it. Make sure that the goals you’re prioritizing are something YOU want! Don’t prioritize a goal just because your parents think you should go to med school, or whatever the goal may be.

  1. Choose a top 3 or MAYBE a top 5 if you absolutely feel the need!

I find that by choosing a top 3 or 5 I am able to really deep dive into what my REAL goals without overwhelming myself. Of course having a ton of goals is great and shows your ambition, but you’re only one person and there are only so many hours in the day. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many goals on your paper, because in the end if you don’t achieve everything it could feel discouraging, when really you achieved a lot.

  1. Write them down

I am SUCH an advocate for putting everything on paper. I have a million notebooks surrounding me at all times. There’s something about putting a pen to paper that just makes it real. I find that when I write things down it not only solidifies it, but it helps me visualize the process. By writing your goals down you can also write down the steps you need to take in order to achieve your goal. For example, if you want to start a blog, write down the things you need to do to launch it. (Choose a name, find a host, buy the domain, etc.)

  1. Track your progress and do a check in

If you’re not tracking your progress, how are you holding yourself accountable? You won’t get anything done if you aren’t making progress. Think of it as if you were at work, your boss gives you evaluations, right? I’d treat this the same. Check in and evaluate how you’re doing. This is also helpful because maybe your goals in the beginning of the year aren’t the same as they were in the middle of the year. That’s ok! This is the perfect time to evaluate and make changes if necessary. This also helps you stay motivated, if you’re goals are no longer aligned with who you are, you won’t be motivated to work toward them.
